Egypt, Fall 1998 ~ Travel
We started our life together by traveling to Egypt for our honeymoon. It was actually the cheapest and most interesting option from St. Petersburg, Russia in 1998. We spent two weeks in a Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, and ventured out on several fascinating trips, including a desert safari to visit a Bedouin tribe, a Red Sea snorkel excursion, and a multi-day trip to Cairo to visit the pyramids, some of its key museums and get a sense of the neighborhoods and life in this incredible megapolis.
It was over 20 years ago now, so it would be hard both to reminisce about specific places, and especially to recommend anything. We were particularly impressed and overwhelmed by Cairo. At the time, stoplights seemed merely a suggestion, even in the heart of the city; smells were quite strong everywhere you went; the Pyramids were shockingly close to the city; the National Museum was quite impressive and sophisticated; and there was just so much of everything in streets, markets, cafes – it was a swift but awesome assault on all the senses. I’d go back, for sure!
