    Maui, Spring 2018 ~ Read

Molokai by Alan Brennert would not be exactly considered a “beach read”, as it deals with a really difficult and graphic page in Hawaii’s history. In the late 1800s, early 1900s, the small island of Molokai, right off the coast of Maui, served as the location for a leprosy colony, and this book describes with beauty and compassion some of its inhabitants, as well as priests and nuns that supported the operations of the institution. I chose this book as one of prerequisites for my Maui trip because it helps a mindful traveler to appreciate the effects of American colonialism. Its inhumane policies largely affected the local population, and it…

    Maui, Spring 2018 ~ Travel

This was our first trip to Hawaii. We loved the near constant mid 80s temperature, meeting a huge turtle on our beach during the first 15 minutes in the water, snorkeling, zip-lining in East Maui, attending the world-famous Old Lahaina Luau, visiting a lavender farm, traveling the Road to Hana, with a stopover at one of the black sand beaches, and attempting to see the Haleakala crater. Our not-so-successful trip to view the Haleakala crater did yield a lunch stop at the Kula Lodge, which is an absolute treasure in upcountry Maui. Individual outdoor gazebos are nestled among a lush tropical forest, with smells of wood-burning stove nearby, sounds of…

    Maui, Spring 2018 ~ Create

I was particularly inspired by intricate Hawaiian quilts. The fabric overlay that is quilted on top is cut out of a single sheet of fabric, folded like a piece of paper for a snowflake. Shapes of breadfruit, hibiscus, pineapple, turtles and dolphins fan out from the center, interspersed with waves, vines and organic lines. Quilting is not an art I have mastered yet, so I did my own interpretation with a denim bleaching technique that I have used for years. The color and texture of the bleached out area remind me of water, so I found this to be a good medium to celebrate Maui. Cutting out the pattern for…

    Prague, Summer 2016 ~ Travel

We decided long ago that our preference for travel would be very intentional, single-city focused trips that would allow us to soak up local color, culture and customs in at least 4-5 days. We don’t see ourselves taking week-long, city-hopping cruises or bus tours only giving you a glimpse of each location and a surface skim of its points of interest. So, Prague became our first “focused” European trip, and it proved to be the perfect recipe. Even years later, I still have vivid memories of its streets, flavors, secret passages, ornate décor and fascinating history. Prague welcomed us with its highly decorated buildings, simple but delicious Eastern European cuisine,…

    Paris, Summer 2013 ~ Travel

This was our first major European trip since having kids, settling into our careers, buying a home. We spent 9 days in Paris, primarily exploring the city, and doing just one side trip to Parc Asterix. We met my Russian family in Paris, and so we had quite a large group of 8 negotiating schedules, jet lag, dietary preferences, and cultural interests. In the end, it was very fun, and so many memories now start, “Remember, when we all met in Paris…”

    Egypt, Fall 1998 ~ Travel

We started our life together by traveling to Egypt for our honeymoon. It was actually the cheapest and most interesting option from St. Petersburg, Russia in 1998. We spent two weeks in a Red Sea resort town of Hurghada, and ventured out on several fascinating trips, including a desert safari to visit a Bedouin tribe, a Red Sea snorkel excursion, and a multi-day trip to Cairo to visit the pyramids, some of its key museums and get a sense of the neighborhoods and life in this incredible megapolis. It was over 20 years ago now, so it would be hard both to reminisce about specific places, and especially to recommend…
